Summer 2015 Skincare Routine

I haven't done an updated skincare routine since winter so it's time to talk about my summer skincare products. For reference, I have oily, acne prone, and sometimes sensitive skin in the spring and summer seasons. I'm normally careful about ingredients like ethanol/alcohol but I've been incorporating it back into my skincare routine. I don't use nearly as many products in the summer as I do in the fall and winter.

Cleansers
1. RE:CIPE ROSE PETAL CLEANSING OIL
25,000 won at Tester Korea (currently 1,151.30 won=$1)
Ingredients: Synthetic ester, PEG-20 Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Damask Rose, Tocopheryl Acetate, vitamin E, Macadamia, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Purified Water, Butylene Glycol, Shea Butter, rose petals
There's also a green tea cleansing oil which is more appropriate for oily skin. I received the rose one from a Memebox so I wasn't able to choose what I wanted. There's a ton of product in the bottle and I've barely made a dent in it a month and a half in. This does a good job of removing makeup and other residue on the face. I'm not a fan of floral scented products but the oil smells just like fresh roses. There are actual dried rose petals in the bottom of the bottle. While I really like this cleansing oil, I might prefer the Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil by just a teeny tiny bit.

2. TONY MOLY CLEAN DEW RED GRAPEFRUIT FOAM CLEANSER
3000 won at Tester Korea
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Myristic Acid, Lauric Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Stearic Acid, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glyceryl Stearate. PEG-100 Stearate, Polysorbate 20, Glycol, Distearate, Trihydroxystearin, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Water, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Water, Melaluca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Water, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Butylene Glycol, CI 15985, CI 7200
There are 4 other varieties besides Red Grapefruit in the Clean Dew Foam Cleanser line: Acerola, Lemon, Aloe, and Blueberry. I use this cleanser once a day in the mornings. I wouldn't recommend this cleanser for anyone with normal or dry skin at all. I'd been using it as a body wash because the pH level for this is a 9 or 9.5 which is really high. I was previously using the Michael Todd Honey & Oat Cleanser and it was turning me into a greasy mess within 30-45 minutes after washing my face. I've been using the Tony Moly Cleanser for the past two weeks and my skin seems to like it. It really is a foamy cleanser and anyone besides oily skin might end up with skin feeling tight and dry. If I start to experience any unusual breakouts I'll switch it out with another cleanser.

3. MICHAEL TODD CHARCOAL DETOX DEEP PORE GEL CLEANSER
$23 at Ulta and Michael Todd.
Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe Vera) Juice, Cocos nucifera (Organic Coconut RBD) Oil, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Wax Beads, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Emulsifying Wax NF, Stearic Acid, Aleurites moluccana (Kukui Nut) Oil, Spinacia oleracea (Spinach) Extract, Activated Charcoal, Xanthan Gum, Cananga Odorata var Genuina (Ylang Ylang II) Essential Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Essential Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Essential Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Essential Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Tetrasodium EDTA
If you're interested purchasing this cleanser, I'd buy it off the Michael Todd website. They often run 20-25% promotions or you can purchase their skincare in sets geared for dry, oily, or sensitive skin. I've raved about this before and I'm still loving it. Again, it's geared towards oily and blemish prone skin so it's a good fit for my skin type. It has a peppemint herbal type scent which is refreshing at the end of the day. I use this nightly after the Re:cipe Cleansing Oil.

Toners
1. MISSHA TIME REVOLUTION CLEAR TONER
$28 for 250 mL at Missha or 6000 won for 125 mL at Tester Korea
Ingredients: Water, Saccharomyces Ferment, Propanediol, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Piper Methysticum Leaf/Root/Stem Extract, Camellia Oleifera Seed Extract, Gaultheria Procumbens (Wintergreen) Leaf Extract, Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Phellodendron Amurense Bark Extract, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Betaine, Butylene Glycol, SOdium Citrate, Cellulose Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Disodium EDTA, 1,2-Hexanediol, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Malic Acid, Glucose, Acetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate
The pH level for this toner falls between the 4-5 mark so this is a great one if you're interested in a lower pH toner. The Missha toner contains both BHA and AHA but those ingredients are closer towards the end of the list. You can think of this as a very gentle exfoliator. So far I haven't noticed a difference in clogged pores or hyperpigmentation although I like how this toner makes my skin feel. I've been using it twice a day for the past few weeks.

2. SECRET NATURE MORINGA SEED TONER
$21.98 at Jolse
Ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 copolymer, PEG-32, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Chlorphenesin, Carbomer, Arginine, Disodium EDTA, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Extract, Lotus, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Fragrance
This Secret Nature Toner would be great for dry, normal and sensitive skin types. It's thicker in consistency than most toners I prefer. The toner has a luxurious scent that reminds me of grapes and a perfume I can't quite put a name on. The scent is a little stronger than I'd like so take note if you're sensitive to fragrance. I used the product for all of May and June until I realized it was too thick and moisturizing for my skin. I'll switch this back into my routine every once in awhile when it's not too warm out and eventually transition this back into my fall skincare routine.

Sheet Masks
So far, I've only found 2 sheet masks that work for oily skin and I only use them on average once a week. Most of the essences in the mask leave my face extremely greasy and sticky. I've heard some people let the essence absorb on their skin for a bit after taking off the sheet mask and then go in with a toner or rinse with water. I might try the toner approach but I prefer clay masks in the summer. After using a sheet mask I apply eye cream and do not continue on with an essence or moisturizer.
1. LEADERS INSOLUTION COCONUT GEL BALANCING RECOVERY MASK
$44.49+$4.99 for shipping at Amazon or $3.50 individually at Memebox

2. MISSHA PURE SOURCE LEMON SHEET MASK
$2 at Missha or $3.61 for 5 at Korea Depart
Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Ethanol, Lemon Extract, Betaine, Lippia Citriodora Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Allantoin, Diethoxyethyl Succinate, Trideceth-9, Phenyltrimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cyclodextrin, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Chlorphenesin, Fragrance

Clay Masks
I've been using the MINT & LEMON and AVOCADO & OATMEAL FREEMAN FACIAL CLAY MASKS twice a week. Of the two I prefer the Avocado one. Based on the product description of the Mint & Lemon Mask "clears breakouts and minimizes the appearance of pores" I would have thought it would be a better fit. It doesn't seem to do much of anything but I'm determined to finish up the mask this summer. The Avocado Mask does a better job of clearing out pores and excess oil without leaving my skin feeling tight.
$4.29 at Ulta or $2.94 at Ulta

Scrubs
1. SKIN79 SWEET HONEY SUGAR SCRUB
13,000 won at Tester Korean or $3.99+$4.99 for shipping at Amazon
Ingredients: Sucrose, Mineral Oil, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Olive Husk Oil, Isododecane, Polysorbate 20,Trihydroxystearin, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Ceresin, Sorbitan sesquioleate, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Honey, Butyrospermum Parkii, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia Flower/leaf/stem Extract, Theobroma Cacao Seed Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Oryza Sativa Extract, Squalane, Tocopheryl Acetate, BHT, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Propylene carbonate, Polydecene, Propylparaben, Fragrance
This scrub is thick and grainy like most sugar scrubs although it melts pretty quickly after it comes into contact with water. It smells like honey and brown sugar and I have to constantly resist the urge to taste the product. This leaves my face feeling soft and smooth from the oils in the product. I use this once a week, usually at night, and occasionally use it on my elbows.

2. VASANTI BRIGHTEN UP ENZYMATIC FACE REJUVENATOR
$34 at Birchbox or $34 at Vasanti
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Aluminum Oxide, Cetyl Alcohol, Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Propanediol, Panthenol, Emulsifying Wax NF, Glyceryl Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Tocopheryl Acetate, Papain, Parfum, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol
This is an excellent exfoliator! At first I was worried this might be a little harsh on my skin but the crystals are really small and fine, yet effective. I've read reviews where this caused some sensitivity and breakouts but this hasn't been the case for me. I do experience some redness immediately afterwards but my skin is extremely soft and the bumps on my face are smoother the next day. If you can get your hands on a sample, I would definitely give it a go to see if it agrees with your skin type.

Essence
1. UNNI RECIPE VITAMIN RECHARGER ESSENCE
I wrote a review of this essence here and I'm still enjoying it. I use it on and off depending on how my face feels after I've washed it. If it's on the greasy side I'll skip the essence and move on to a moisturizer.

Eye Cream
1. IOPE ESSENTIAL TONE & WRINKLE CARE EYE CREAM
13,900 won (81% off) at Tester Korea or $17.85 at BeautyNet Korea
Ingredients: Purified Water, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Niacinamide, Glycerin, Arachidyl alcohol, Stearic Acid, Shea Butter, Jojoba ester, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Palmitic Acid, Behenyl Alcohol, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Arachidyl Glucoside, Adenosine, Myristic acid, Lauric Acid, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Fast Acid Magenta, Brilliant blue FCF
I'm wondering if this eye cream along with several other Iope products are going to be discontinued because they are heavily discounted. I don't have a dry under eye area and it tends to be the only part of my skin that is normal in the summer. This Iope Eye Cream might be a tad bit heavy for me but it hasn't caused any bumps or reactions. It has a mature perfume scent to it but it's not offensive by any means. I like this but I won't repurchase. If you have a dry under eye area this will not give you enough hydration.

Moisturizer
Snow White on left, Sebum X on right
1. HOLIKA HOLIKA SKIN & AC MILD SEBUM X MIRROR CREAM
$19.97 at Amazon or 12,720 won at Tester Korea
Ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, Ethanol, Piper Methysticum Leaf/root/stem Extract, Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Ficus Carica Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus Fruit Extract, Laurus Nobilis Leaf Extract, Mentha Piperita Extract, Eruca Sativa Leaf Extract, Tea Chrysanthemum, Polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrogenated lecithin, Citrus aurantium dulcis, Citrus Medica Limonum Fruit Oil, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Fruit Oil, Cymbopogon Nardus Oil, Geranium Maculatum Oil, Carbomer, Pentylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Trisodium EDTA, Butylene Glycol, Ceramide 3, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol
I was going to give this cream away because of the ethanol but I'm glad I decided to keep it! This is working nicely to hydrate my skin yet control any oiliness. Since I switched to this gel moisturizer, my face hasn't felt as sticky or slick. It has a light, fresh scent which I really like and hasn't triggered any unusual breakouts. FYI, I rarely get ginormous cystic acne anymore unless it's right before my period. What I have been noticing is clusters of small acne that sprout up throughout the day and disappear within a day or two. I'm pretty sure the culprit is all the excess oil on my face but I'm doing as much as I can about the situation. Let's just say I'm ready to move on to fall.

2. SECRET KEY SNOW WHITE MILKY LOTION
$14.20 with Amazon Prime or 9900 won at Tester Korea
Ingredients: Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, Titanium Dioxide, Phenyl Trimethicone, Butylene Glycol, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Dimethicone, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone, Sodium Hyaluronate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sodium chloride, Polyepsilon-Lysine, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance
I've been using this mostly on my cheeks since that's the area with the worst hypigmentation for me. I don't particularly care for the baby powder scent or texture of the lotion but this stuff really does whiten. I wouldn't recommend this to darker skin tones as it might leave a strange white cast. I had my mother try this out (she's about 2 shades darker than me) and I laughed when I saw how white her face initially looked after applying this. I also apply this to the back of my neck where I tan very easily. I try to walk around with a scarf and collared shirts but it's been pretty hot in NY. Of course, I always slather SPF everywhere but I guess a tan is inevitable in that area. This works so well that I may purchase the Snow White Spot Gel.

Spot Treatment
1. SHARA SHARA BEE TOX SPOT CREAM
14,900 won at Tester Korea or $16.31 at Korea Depart
Ingredients: Water, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Stearyl Alcohol, Beeswax, Hydrogenated polyisobutene, Hyaluronic Acid, Beta-Glucan, Paraffin, PEG-100 Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Dimethicone, Limnanthes Alba Seed Oil, Betaine, Emu Oil, Colloidal sulfur, Cetearyl Alcohol, Microcrystalline Wax, Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil, Butyrospermum Parkii, Sorbitan Stearate, Triethanol amine, Carbomer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Citrus Paradisi Fruit Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Triclosan, Fragrance, Chlorphenesin, Salix Alba Bark Extract, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Butylene Glycol, Salicylic Acid, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Bee Venom, Propolis Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract, Camellia Japonica Flower
This stuff is not effective in my opinion and don't waste your money on it. I'm not even sure why I've been using it for as long as I have and I'm almost done with the tube. The spot cream is like a white cream with a funky medicinal smell and doesn't shrink small-medium sized acne. I'm not sure why there are so many ingredients in a spot cream and some of them are acne triggers according to CosDNA. I wanted to try something other than benzoyl peroxide but my skin seems to respond best to the ingredient. Plus it will help to dry out my T-zone area which is an added benefit. I might have to stop by the drugstore in the next few days to purchase the Neutrogena On The Spot Acne Treatment.

Something I find a necessity for oily skin in the warmer months are BLOTTING SHEETS. These are lifesavers in humid weather and I have several packets sitting around my desk and in my purse.
1. BOSCIA GREEN TEA BLOTTING LINENS  $10 for 100 sheets at Sephora
2. CLEAN & CLEAR OIL ABSORBING SHEETS  $4.22 for 50 sheets at Walmart
I prefer the Clean & Clear sheets because they're more durable than the Boscia ones which seem to rip on me as I blot. They're both good blotting sheets but it just comes down to personal preference.

And there you have it, my summer skincare routine. I never thought I'd be suffering from oily skin in my late thirties but that's the card I've been dealt with. I dream of the day when I don't have to worry about oil in the warmer weather and constantly blot throughout the day. One can always hope right?

Thanks for stopping by!
Jennifer
