Price
As with most drugstore products, the prices will vary according to your location and choice of store. I purchased mine at Harmon for $6.99 with coupons so each color blur was $5.60. They're pretty much sold everywhere now so you can find them at Target, Walmart, Ulta, and your local drugstores.
Packaging
The Lip Studio Color Blur is housed in a retractable pencil with a rubber smudger. The lip color matches the tube which makes it easy to grab the shade you're looking for. When you twist the pencil up and down, it needs to be done from the top where the smudger is. Out of habit I want to twist from the middle of the tube rather than the tip. One thing to note is the pencil needs to be twisted back down in between uses.
Scent
There is no scent to the lip product itself BUT the smudger does have one. It smells like an eraser which I find a little disturbing to be applying on to the lips.
Texture/Consistency
For a matte lip product, I have no idea how Maybelline got these to be so creamy. They are easy to apply, glide on, blend smoothly, and feel silky and smooth on the lips. For the most part, they won't cling to dry patches or emphasize fine lines. I have read some of the darker colors like Plum, Please will cling to dry patches but that wasn't my experience with the 3 shades I have.
My Thoughts
From left to right: Berry Misbehaved, My My Magenta, and I Like to Mauve It |
As far as the smudger, it doesn't erase the color while you spread the color out on the outer lips. It works quite well for the gradient look except I don't like the scent of it. Instead I've been using my finger to get the "blurred" effect which does the job but it does take off some color. If you want more color on the lips, apply the product all over. If you want a subtle or softer look, then apply the product on the inside of the lips and blend it out. It all depends on your preference and what kind of look you want to create.
Since these lip pencils have such a creamy consistency, they're not as long wearing as I'd expect for a matte product. They will transfer and wear off when you eat and drink. You will need to reapply if you want more intensity in color throughout the day. They do stain the lips a little but the product doesn't wear off strangely on the lips. My lips start to feel a little dry after a few hours so I would use a lip balm on top.
Final Thoughts
I would recommend grabbing one or two shades if you're interested in trying these out but they're not a must have product in my opinion. I like the pigmentation and initial creaminess of the product but the whole point and uniqueness of the Lip Studio Color Blurs are the smudging and blurring effect. Since I don't use the smudger, I can create a gradient effect with any lip product I currently own. I'd actually recommend purchasing Maybelline's Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Colors instead. There are 20 shades to choose from and they are less drying in the long run than the Color Blurs.
Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!
